Mentor Text 1 - Sweeter

Updated: Apr 24, 2022

The vibe that I got from listening to this song was so calm and really heart-touching. Leon Bridges wrote this in a response to recent events that has happened over the past couple years that deal with police brutality against people of color. More specifically this was written shortly after the murder of George Floyd. He says he can "only hope for a life more sweeter" than what him and countless of other African-Americans have to struggle with every single day. The song emphasizes that despite everything that the world thinks that it has done for racial inequality, nothing has actually changed especially within the black community. Black men and women have constantly been discriminated against and through this song Leon describes his own story in which he had witnessed a black man or woman's life be abruptly ended because of violence. His audience is the whole entire world and he intends to spread just the fact that there is still, not affirmative actions being done to protect the lives of innocent Americans.
